Who Is God Calling Heritage to Become?

Throughout our BECOMING series, we've been asking questions about who we are as a church and who God is forming us to become.

We've followed the story of the early church in Acts. We've seen a people born of the Spirit, formed into community and sent into the world to participate in the mission of Jesus.
Again and again, we've witnessed God leading His people into circumstances and opportunities they hadn't imagined. And we've watched them learn to recognize what God was doing and faithfully follow.

Now, as we look toward Heritage's second decade, we're asking a question together: Who is God calling Heritage to become?

We aren't forming  a list of plans or programs. We're seeking God together. And we're inviting everyone at Heritage to participate.

What is discernment?

Discernment is the process of tuning into God's desires.

Discernment isn't simply about making good decisions or figuring out what comes next. It is the intentional practice of seeking God's direction, paying attention to His work and allowing Him to shape our understanding.

In Acts 15, the early church faced significant questions about its identity and mission. They came together, spoke honestly, listened to one another, considered what God had been doing and examined Scripture.

Their desire was to respond faithfully to God. That is the kind of community we want to continue becoming.

Romans 12:1–2 reminds us that discerning God's will is connected to offering ourselves to God and being transformed through the renewing of our minds.

An Invitation to Practice Discernment

Tuning into God is also turning to God

Over the coming weeks, we're inviting everyone at Heritage to make intentional time for Scripture, prayer and reflection.

This is not an assignment to come up with a vision for our church. And there is no expectation that everyone will arrive at a particular answer.

We are simply asking each other to make room for God.
Spend time in Scripture. Allow God's Word to shape your understanding, challenge your assumptions and renew your mind.

Spend time in prayer. Bring your hopes, questions and concerns before God. Ask Him to shape your desires according to His.

Pay attention. Consider where you've seen God working in our church, in your life and among our neighbors.

Listen with others. Discernment is not only a personal practice. We are a community seeking God's direction together.
