Beginning Sunday, September 7, we will begin passing contribution baskets through the aisles during Family News in worship. This will be a month-long trial as we discern whether passing baskets makes it easier for some to participate in contributing to the ministries and works at Heritage.

Why are we doing this? We want to practice flexibility by re-introducing a more traditional method of giving. While the vast majority of us give online (which is wonderfully convenient and secure), passing baskets may open the door for others to join in more easily.

If you recall, after the pandemic we stopped passing anything in worship. As time went on, we slowly returned to familiar practices, but contribution baskets stayed on the sideline. One reason was simple: most giving had moved online. But there were also theological and logistical reasons. We’ve been intentional about not blending contribution into our time at the Lord’s Table. We want the Table to be a moment of remembrance and communion — not one that feels like “paying the check” at the end of a meal.

So for the month of September (at least), we’re going to try this. Contribution baskets will be passed during Family News. If this makes giving more accessible for you, please take advantage of it. At the end of the month, we’ll evaluate together whether to continue.
