Serving on Sunday
Serving is a blessing. The chance to do something beyond ourselves is a gift from God, and one of the ways we grow together as a church family. At Heritage, we believe serving is part of belonging. It’s one of the ways we show love to God and one another.
There are countless ways to serve at Heritage, and every ministry carries its own God-given purpose. But there is one area of service we all share—our Sunday mornings. Each week takes a village. From preparing spaces, to welcoming guests, to setting the tone for worship, Sunday morning depends on many hands and willing hearts. Because this time is so important, we expect every member to play a part.
To support this shared commitment, Sunday mornings at Heritage now operate on an “opt-out” system. Everyone 16 and older will be scheduled periodically to serve in different areas throughout the year. You’ll receive your assignments through email and the Heritage app, where you can easily see when and where you’re scheduled. If a date doesn’t work, you can simply opt out or request a swap. This system helps us plan well, distribute responsibilities fairly, and ensure that no one carries the load alone.
Serving on Sunday mornings isn’t just another task—it’s a meaningful way we care for one another and welcome our community. When we each take part, we strengthen the body of Christ and help make Heritage a place of hospitality, worship and grace.

FAQ
What if I can’t serve on the date I’m assigned?
You can always decline an assignment. Just opt out in the email or through the app and you’ll automatically be reassigned to another day.
Can I request specific dates to serve?
You can block out dates that do not work for you in advance. However, we aren’t able to take requests for particular serving dates. Our goal is to include everyone in the rhythm of serving on Sundays, and more opportunities will always come up.
What if I don’t know how to serve in the area I’m assigned?
No problem. Each area has a simple guide and point person to help you. Most roles take very little training, and we’ll make sure you’re supported.
Do I have to serve every time I’m assigned?
We’re asking everyone to commit to serving when they’re able. But life happens—travel, health, family needs—so that’s why the opt-out feature exists. Communicate when you need to step back, and we’ll adjust.
How often will I be scheduled?
Most people will serve a few times a year, depending on the role and the number of people available. The goal is shared responsibility.
Who is included in the serving schedule?
Everyone at Heritage who is 16 and older will be part of the rotation. We'll do our best to have teenager serve with parents and other family members.
Where will I see my assignments?
Assignments will be posted in two places:
- Your email (with a direct link to accept or opt out)
- The Heritage app (where you can view your full schedule)
Will I get a reminder before my serving date?
Yes. The system sends reminders automatically, so you’ll always know when your date is coming.
Can I trade dates with someone else?
If you want to swap, you’re free to reach out to someone and arrange it. After a trade, just notify the ministry lead so they can update the system.
Can I serve in more than one area?
Absolutely. If you love serving on Sundays, let us know and we’ll add you to additional teams or make you part of our “on-call” list.
What areas of service are included in the Sunday schedule?
Areas include greeting, communion prep, coffee setup, hospitality roles, kids hallway support and other simple but important tasks that help create a warm, welcoming Sunday experience.
What if I have physical limitations or accessibility needs?
Just let us know. There are plenty of roles that are seated, low movement or light responsibility. We’ll make sure you’re scheduled in ways that fit your abilities.
What if I really enjoy one particular serving area?
Great! Let the ministry lead know. While the system rotates everyone across multiple areas, we love using your strengths and preferences when possible.
What if I’m new to Heritage?
Welcome! Once you’ve been with us a short time, you’ll be added to the serving rotation. Until then, you’re always welcome to jump in as you feel comfortable.
Why are we using an opt-out system instead of asking for volunteers?
Because Sunday mornings matter. An opt-out system ensures that the responsibility is shared, that no one is overworked and that we’re prepared each week. It reflects our belief that serving is part of belonging.
What happens if I don’t respond to my assignment at all?
You’ll receive reminders, but if there’s no response we’ll assume you’re unable to serve and reassign the role. However, we ask everyone to respond so the team isn’t left guessing.
How far in advance will I receive my assignments?
You’ll typically receive assignments weeks in advance, giving you plenty of time to plan or opt out if needed.
Will this affect other volunteer roles outside of Sunday mornings?
No. This system is only for Sunday morning service roles. Other ministries will continue scheduling and organizing in their usual ways.
Can my family serve together?
Sometimes, yes. Certain roles work well for couples or families with older kids. You can note this preference to the ministry lead, and we’ll do our best when possible.
Who do I contact if I have questions?
You can always reach out to the church office. We’re happy to help.
